Is your infant or child having problems feeding or swallowing?
Have you been told "it's okay if breastfeeding is painful" or "your child is growing just fine, they aren't having an issues with feeding" or my favorite "tongue tie is only a concern if a baby is breastfeeding."
As a parent, these responses from medical professionals can be frustrating when you are trying to provide one of the basic human needs: nutrition. You can feel like you aren't being listened to or your concerns are being brushed off as "normal" when in reality you know deep down that this is not true. You know there is more to the story that what your pediatrician is able to tell you.
If you feel that your child's issues with feeding may be to due to some underlying issue, continue to advocate for your child. If your current pediatrician is not hearing your concerns, find a new one. If you think your child might need a referral to a gastroenterologist or ear nose and throat doctor, keep asking for the referral until they give it to you. If you feel your child would benefit from seeing a feeding specialist, then search for you one in your area and set up an evaluation.
This parental instincts are there for a reason. If you don't fight for your child, who will?
